Share with you something about video formats

As it is well know that video formats are classified into two applications, one for local use and the other for Internet. The formats for local use include AVI, nAVI, DV-AVI,MPEG suite, Dvix, MOV, etc. What the differences between these formats? I’m here to give some general information as a guide. AVI, Audio Video Interleaved, is developed by Microsoft in 1992. AVI has such advantages as high image quality, application in multi-platforms. But its disadvantages are also explicit, large volume, without a unified compression standard, and the most common nuisance is that the higher-version Windows Media Player simply can’t play AVI videos which are edited with earlier codes, and vise versa. So it is not a uncommon case that when we AVI videos , it just don’t work or anyway it works ,there is only audio without image or such kinds of weird problems. If you happen to be stuck with these tracks, download related codecs to cope. nAVI, new AVI , a new kind of video format. Don’t mistake it for the brother of AVI, and in fact the two has little relationship. nAVI is a variation of compression arithmetic ASF, but still a bit distinct from it. By increasing frame rate, nAVI enhances definition of ASF videos, but at the cost of the streaming attribute of ASF video files. DV-AVI, as Digital Video Format, was rolled out by Sony, Panasonic, JVC and several other companies. It is the format applied by the most popular vidicons at present to record video data.It can be transmitted to PCs through IEEE 1394 port, and vise versa, that is to transmit the edited video data back to vidicons. The extension name of this format file is .avi, and so comes the name DV-AVI. MPEG, Moving Picture Expert Group, is the format of VCD, SVCD, DVD. This format applies lossy compression to reduce redundant info in active images, and to express it more clearly, MPEG makes use of the fact that the two contiguous images are almost the same, to extrat the redundant info of the latter image ,as so to meet the compression aim( the highest compression reaches 200:1).At present, MPEG suite family members are MPEG-1,MPEG-2,MPEG-4.The other two MPEG-7 and MPEG-2 are right now under development. DivX, a video compression standard , is a variation of MPEG-4, namely DVDrip. It uses DivX technology to compress DVD videos, and at the same time applies MP3 or AC3 to compress audios, and later composes the video and audio files with associated subtitles to create the video. It is comparable with DVD in image quality, with a much decreased volume as an additional merit. So people come to hail it as a ‘terminator’ to DVD. MOV, developed by Apple , features a high compression ratio and near perfect definition, while its most outstanding trait is its trans-platform ability, supporting Windows other than its intimate pal MacOS.
