TV is changing!

It doesn’t seem so long ago (to me at least, and maybe to some of you  too) that the number of TV channels available to the nation’s Television viewing audience could be counted on the fingers of one hand!

There were many complaints of ‘repeats’ being shown on the very limited number of channels being broadcast at that time. Not surprising really when you consider that producing quality programs in those days was very expensive and the number of channels available to show them on were few and far between.

But it was ‘world changing’, none the less! Gone were the days of the family huddling around the family radio to hear what was going on in the country, and indeed the world. Radio was also about to change too, but that’s another story.

The pictures were black and white in those days too. Color was a few years in the future at that time and seemed like an impossibility and something which only the very wealthiest among us would ever be able to afford to enjoy.

My! How quickly things have changed.

Colour TV became available for ‘the masses’ and changed how we viewed TV forever.

Satellite and cable TV then came along with a plethora of channels to choose from and overnight we became a nation of ‘channel hoppers’, flitting from one interesting program to another.

And with the advent of affordable domestic video tape recorders the world of TV began to change yet again.

Suddenly we could time-shift our viewing – if you could get the recorder to start recording the correct channel at the right time, of course!

We could watch that favorite TV program at our convenience even if not sat in front of a TV at the time of the transmission.

No more disappointments when held up at work or stuck in traffic, unable to get home in time to watch that ‘must-see’ program or when some domestic issue got in the way such as a visitor arriving at just the ‘wrong’ moment or having to go out on an errand. What a disaster!

All very frustrating, particularly if you were watching a series and ended up missing the vital part of the story line. All you could do was ask someone who had seen it to run through that story line for you next day.

Now, with home video tape recorders, there was a way around such difficulties. It seemed like a miracle, even if the picture quality left something to be desired.

With the greatly increased number of channels to watch we now had the means to watch one program whilst the VCR recorded another one for later consumption. Magic!

And now we have Digital TV with what seems like an almost infinite number of channels to choose from… well a few hundred, anyway!

Some of these digital TV receivers have built-in hard drives for recording programs and also to enable pausing ‘live’ TV and starting again when that visitor has left!  So very useful and once experienced they leave you wondering how on Earth you managed without it!

There are now programs available on virtually every topic you could imagine. Some of interest, some not. But hey! Who cares? With so many channels to choose from there is bound to be something, somewhere, of interest to watch.

In addition to the regular Entertainment channels we now have Shopping channels, Sports channels, 24 hour News channels, Weather channels, Documentary channels, Foreign Language Channels, Health channels, Baby channels…. You name it and it’s probably there!

Spoilt for choice? You ain’t seen nothing yet!

Prepare to be even more spoilt for choice.

Internet TV is now with us and is growing at a phenomenal rate.

With Cable and Satellite TV you have a large number of channels and programs to choose from but they are generally of a national or regional nature and governed by what the TV companies in your country decide to broadcast.

With Internet TV things are a little different – to say the least!

Travelling abroad? Or maybe even living abroad? Want to keep abreast of what’s happening at home? No problem. Browse the website for your ‘home’ channel and chances are they will have a on-line service available for you.

Want to watch a whole series in one go – easy!

Want to watch something a little less ‘mainstream’? Chances are you’ll find that too!

Go on-line and search on Google or Yahoo or whatever search engine you prefer and type in something like ‘internet tv’ and see what comes up. You may be very surprised.

Sometimes the picture quality is a little less than perfect but ‘What the heck!’ it’s probably more than adequate for getting up to date with what’s going on back home.

Saying that, in many cases, the picture and audio quality is often superb and quite watchable even for long periods.

And don’t forget these Internet TV programs are FREE! No monthly subscriptions. No installation fees. All you need is a PC (laptop or desktop) and a broadband connection.

Now don’t go running away with the notion that you’ll have to sit in front of your PC squinting at its small display to watch all this free live TV on the Internet. Oh no! Certainly not. Connect your PC to your home TV and Bingo! Free, Live, Internet TV on your 52″ plasma! The picture quality is probably way better than you’d ever imagine and connecting up is not at all difficult: but maybe that will be the subject of another article!

Watch free live TV on Internet and you may well end up cancelling that monthly cable or satellite TV subscription and becoming an Internet TV viewer, watching what you want, when you want, for free and forever!
