Search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN are really just data bases. When you do a Google Search you are not searching the “world wide web” you are searching Google’s data base. There are two ways to get in to these databases. One is to submit your site to the different search engines. In about 6 to 9 weeks the search engine will index your site. They have software that comes to your site and index every page and adds it to the database. They come into your main web URL and follow the links to all the pages of your site. They capture key elements from the code on your page to the content. These are then stored in the data base. When someone puts a keyword in the search box the “algorithms” determine the best page or links to the best pages for your search.
The other way to get added to the search engines data base is to have the search engine software find you through a link to your site from another web site back to yours. The software, called “spiders” will periodically comeback and re crawl your site to see if you have updated it.
One important thing to know is that each page on your site is indexed individually and each page stands on its own. The ranking are based upon the combination of correct meta tags, relevant content to the keyword they are trying to get rankings for and link popularity. Mostly one way links back to their site from relevant sites.
As long as the search engine can index the site, clearly read the meta tags and content, the better. The big issues come when a site is built in flash with very little content (search engines cannot read or index “flash” sites. Also, if the bulk of the relevant content is in PDF format this is bad because the search engines cannot read PDF. If the search engines cannot index the relevant text there will be no rankings.
You all ready know this but “sites” are not ranked, individual pages are ranked for specific terms found in the content of that page as well as link popularity, (relevant links pointing back to that specific page) for the term that you are trying to get ranked on. Paid search is when your ad shows up at the very top of a Google search or down the right hand side of the results page. These are called “sponsored ads”. You pay for those positions. Natural Search
Natural Search is when you type in a “keyword” and a link and a description shows up on left hand side of the search result page. The only way to get on the first page is to have very relevant content on your web site and links to your site from other relevant sites. This is a long process for people in it for the long haul. There are a lot of companies that claim to be able to get you on the first page of Google. That may be true if the “search term” is very specific and no one else would ever search for it but you or they are using a “black hat” method that could get you site banned from the search engine. Bottom line: Paid Search means you pay for your position. The benefit is, if you have the $$, you will get instant traffic. Stop paying and the traffic goes away. Natural search is free traffic but it is built over time. The advantage is, if done right, it can provide traffic for a long time.
Search traffic (paid or natural) is the BEST traffic to have because you are being found by folks who are specifically looking for what you have. It does not get any better than that.

Search Results Strategy #1: Speak your visitors’ language
No, I don’t mean English, Spanish, or Russian!
When I say you should speak your visitors’ language, I mean you should use the exact words and phrases they use to search for your products or services!
I can’t TELL you how many times I see people building their sites around the words THEY themselves use to describe what they’re selling, even going so far as to optimize their sites using the name of the product!
Why is that a problem?
Well, let’s say you sell the “GutterClear 3000,” a tool that comes in pretty handy to clean out all the gunk in your gutters without ever having to get up on a ladder.
Now, let’s say there are thousands of people out there looking for a really cool tool for hands-free (and ladder-free) gutter cleaning.
Do you think they’re all going to sit down in front of Google and type “GutterClear 3000″?
Not likely, right? Chances are, they’re going to describe what they’re trying to accomplish, or what problem they’re trying to solve (“gutter cleaning tool,” “clean gutters without ladder,” etc).
So even though you’ve got the #1 spot on Google for “GutterClear 3000,” the product remains unsold, because nobody is using that word to find it!
And please, never assume. Use a good keyword research tool, like Wordtracker or Keyword Discovery, to be sure you’ve identified the EXACT words your potential customers are using to find you!
Search Results Strategy #2: Make sure your pages are search engine friendly
Once you’ve done your keyword research, and understand how your customers are searching for you, you can use that information to create a site that will appeal to the search engine spiders, which, in turn, will improve your rankings.
The higher your site appears on the results page, the GREATER the chances that people will click on it!
So be sure you use your keywords in your:
Title tag — This is the title of your site that usually appears in the actual search engine results. Search engine spiders often look at the title tag FIRST to understand what your site is about.
That makes the title tag one of the best ways to appeal to both potential visitors and search engines at the same time!
Headline and subhead — By including your main keywords in your headline and subheads, and wrapping them in <h> tags, you’ll be tipping off the search engines that the site’s content reflects what’s in the heads and subheads, which is an SEO plus.
At the same time, by displaying your best keywords in the headline and subheads, your visitors will see that they’ve come to the right place the second they land on your page… and be more likely to stick around.
Salescopy — Because the search engines “crawl” your site looking for information about how to categorize your site, and also check to see how relevant your copy is, you want to make sure you include your keywords in the site’s copy.
But don’t get carried away! Search engines can tell when you’re cramming your site full of words JUST to get better rankings, and will penalize you for it… and you want to be sure your site actually makes sense to your visitors!
Meta tags — Your description meta tag normally contains the “blurb” that appears with the link to your site on the search results.
Your keyword meta tag contains your strongest keywords relevant to each page.
Neither of these, on their own, will be enough to improve your site’s rankings, but when done properly, they help give the search engines a more accurate “snapshot” of what your site is about.
Image (alt) tags – Search engines can’t “read” images, but they can read the text that you use to describe the images.
This descriptive text, called an “alt” tag, is one more way to add multiple strong keywords to your site, again increasing your overall chances of being categorized for that particular term.
Another way to use your keywords is in the way you ORGANIZE the pages in your site.
Make sure that all of the information or products on a page are related or relevant. The LAST thing you want to do is confuse the search engine spiders with a mishmash of words on any given page that don’t make any sense together.
At this point, it’s pretty clear that it’s the WORDS on your site that give you the overall competitive edge when it comes to your search engine rankings, so resist the urge to “fancy” your site by using Flash, tons of graphics, or other unnecessary elements.
The more clearly you spell out what your site is about by using your keywords, the better your chances of raising to the TOP of the results page!
Search Engine Strategy #3: Keep your site up-to-date
Like death and taxes, it’s INEVITABLE that your site optimization will change… and what’s working today may not get you ANY results three months from now.
That’s because, over time, people, markets, search trends, and even keywords change…
… so it’s crucial that you constantly monitor your top keywords, and make changes to your site as necessary, in order to maintain your dominant position in the search results.
You should be setting aside time every WEEK to make sure that you’re still optimized for the best keywords!
And if you CAN’T seem to find the time each week to do this, then consider hiring someone to help. Trust me: it’s an investment that should MORE than pay for itself with increased traffic and sales!

Search engine spiders aren’t THAT smart. Spiders/bots are programmed to constantly crawl around search engines until they find content they can index. They aren’t going to stop and wait around until you fix that broken link. That’s not their job. It’s YOUR job to make sure search engines can spider your site.
In order for your site’s pages to be crawled, they need to take visitors to different locations. Visitors should be able to easily navigate within your site or be taken to an external link/site. If you have bad or broken links, this seriously reduces your site’s crawlability and your site could be permanently filtered out of SERPs (search engine result pages).
Crawlability errors are what kill your SEO – don’t make the following mistakes or say good bye to being found in search engines.
Pay attention to robots.txt files – That’s the easiest way to mess up your crawlability. Robots.txt files direct search engine spiders how to view your site. One mistake can bump you out of search engines permanently so be extra careful when working with these files.
Don’t use too many variables in your URLs – Google can crawl long links but it’s still not a fan of long URLs. It’s better to use short URLs – they get clicked on more often in SERPs
Don’t add Session IDs in URLS – If you do use Session IDs in your URLs, store them in cookies. Spiders won’t crawl URLs with Session IDs – they clog up the SERPs
Watch out for code bloat – This can be a HUGE problem. Spiders are good at separating code versus content, but don’t make it difficult for them either. Don’t use so much code that your content isn’t easy to find.
Spiders can’t follow Flash links or execute JavaScript – Designs that use Flash and JavaScript will stop spiders in their tracks. They also can’t read text or images inside Flash. Stick with HTML links (links should preferably be text or images)
How to Fix Crawlability Mistakes
Do NOT change your URLs unless they are broken. Keep in mind the following tips mentioned above. Keep them short, don’t use too many variables, leave out Session IDs, etc.
When creating URLs, use keywords and hyphens to separate keywords. Spiders recognize hyphens as spaces – don’t use underscores, etc. Don’t make your URLs look spammy with keywords.
Fix your domain canonicalization. Are you going to use www.business.com or business.com? (don’t use both!) Which domain gets the most inbound links, etc? That’s the URL you should use as your primary domain. If you use a secondary domain, make sure you include a 301 redirect back to your primary domain.

Other pages that you might not want crawled, depending on the content might be a guest book that you expect to be filled with spam or a feedback system that is not very flattering to you. It is also a good idea to instruct the spiders not to crawl a page with a lot of animation or flash on it as this can be mistakenly read by a spider as a malfunctioning site.

If they do not crawl your website, your site will not be indexed and it will not appear on the organic listings of search engines.
3. Submit your site to social bookmarking platforms. The best way to get your site noticed by search engines is to let them naturally stumble across it. One way is to submit your site to popular social bookmarking platforms like Digg, Reddit, and StumbleUpon. Spiders usually visit these sites multiple times in a single day. This is why if you bookmark your site, you stand a very high chance for it to be found and indexed.
4. Get a backlink from a website with high PageRank (PR). Getting a high PR backlink to your site definitely paves the way for successful indexing and possible good organic rankings on search engines. Directory linking and submission is one of my favourite ways to get backlinks. Target those directories with high PR and submit your website to them. Some of the popular directories such as Yahoo may require you to pay, which I think will be well worth the money.
5. Write articles and submit to popular article directories. Article marketing is a great way to get your site indexed by search engines, as well as generate good traffic to your website. Include a link to your site in your articles and submit them to popular article directories like EzineArticles and GoArticles. Spiders visit these directories often and once they crawl your article, they will follow the link in it and find your website.
