An Overview of the Effects of Global Warming

It is important to understand the significance that global warming has on not only our earth, but our daily lives as well. It’s also important to understand the effects of global warming that our children and grandchildren will experience in the years to come if things continue the way they are now.

First, it’s important to understand that “Global Warming” is also known as the “Greenhouse effect”. Instead of a plastic or glass shield, the earth has around it a series of atmospheric gases consisting mostly of nitrogen and oxygen molecules. The earth is about 60 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than it would be if it didn’t have those atmospheric gases surrounding it. They keep the earth warm and protected from excess UV (Ultra Violet) rays from the sun. Once warmed, their molecules then radiate a portion of this heat energy back to earth, creating more warming on the surface of our planet. It is this radiation which causes atmospheric gases to move back to earth that scientists call the “greenhouse effect”.

Much debate in the last five years about the greenhouse effect has centered on interpreting temperature numbers generated at weather stations all over the world. The data from these thermometers are averaged and plotted in attempts to determine just how fast the earth has heated up since the measurements began. There is now no doubt the world is getting warmer. The thermometers show that the world is warmer now than at any time since the measurements started. The year 1990 was the hottest year in the last century. Together with 1991, the years of 1983, 1987, 1988, and 1989, have been measured to be the warmest 6 years in the last hundred years. 1991 was the second warmest year of the past century, perhaps due to the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo during that year. The ash from the volcano in the upper atmosphere blocks some sunlight to earth, and is expected to generate a temporary two or three year cooling effect. After that time, most ash particles will have settled back to earth, and most scientists expect to see the global warming trend continue.

According to scientists, we can with “99% confidence conclude that current temperatures represent a real warming trend rather than a chance fluctuation over the 30-year period.” Most scientists agree that the planet’s temperature has risen 0.5 degrees Celsius since 1900, and will continue to increase at an increasing rate. The environment is responding to this warming. For instance, a study of mountain plants in the Alps (Europe), shows that some cold-loving plants are starting to move to higher and cooler altitudes. That is a possible response to increasing temperatures.
The global effects of the greenhouse effect cannot be directly predicted simply because we do not have enough knowledge in the subject. However, we have been able to draw direct connections between certain natural phenomenon that supports the idea that something is changing.

Global warming has great effect on crops and weather conditions around the world. The northern hemisphere contains more land area than the southern hemisphere, and conversely, a lower percentage of the world’s oceans. Since oceans absorb more heat than land areas, it is not surprising that most climate models predict faster heating over the northern hemisphere than the global average. In addition, models predict faster temperature increases at higher latitudes. If global warming trends continue, high temperatures everywhere in the US may reduce US agricultural productivity.

Northern continental areas are projected to have drier summer soils, due in part to earlier snow melts in the spring, and hotter, more cloudless summers, causing extensive evaporation of ground moisture. In addition, if the inland areas of the northern hemisphere are expected to receive less moisture, then, lake and river levels will be lower. Some reports predict the level of the Great Lakes will drop between 2 and 8 feet. River flows in the western US may be very vulnerable to increase temperatures expected as result of the greenhouse effect.

The Effects of Global Warming

When you hear about the effects of global warming it is important to understand that the effects we are experiencing today are moderate compared to what the future will see if we do not take preventative action. Over the next century researchers and environmental professionals are stating that the effects of global warming will continue on a constant inclined curve. Temperatures heating up a little bit each decade until the earth’s temperatures reach the sweltering levels that we experienced in history. Scientists believe that the earth’s temperatures will rise between 2-9 degrees Fahrenheit by 2050.

The Arctic and the earth’s northern latitudes will feel the most of the effects of global warming as they continue to escalate. As the Arctic packs and glaciers begin to melt from the increased temperatures the tundra and seas surrounding the areas will continue to absorb the warmth which was once reflected back into space. Climate models show that if temperatures throughout the rest of the world rise to 3 degrees Fahrenheit they will more than likely rise to at least 7 degrees Fahrenheit in the Arctic. From this the oceans throughout the world will become full with melting glaciers and ice from the Arctic likely to rise by at least 3ft.

As the temperatures continue to rise this will force the ocean to evaporate quicker and therefore more rainfall will be experienced. The problem with this effect is that the rainfall may hit areas of the world which do not need it at all causing massive floods and monsoons. Subtropical areas like India are expected to be the target of this particular effect of global warming. On the other hand it is safe to say that droughts are going to be more of a problem than flooding.

There are predictions that the future effects of global warming may have its benefits as well. In the northern part of the world such as Canada, the warmer temperatures will mean longer growing seasons and more rainfall. This of course then will put an end to any food shortage that may be occurring and provide a new sense of prosperity to countries throughout the world which have been struggling to survive.

Many of the changes and effects listed above are already taking place today on a smaller scale of course. Sea levels are rising due to thermal expansion of the ocean, in addition to melting of land ice. Amounts and patterns of precipitation are changing as well but only slightly in comparison to what has been predicted for the future. Changes in temperature and precipitation patterns increase the frequency and intensity of other extreme weather events such as floods, droughts, heat waves, and tornadoes.

Other effects of global warming include higher or lower agricultural yields, further glacial retreat, reduced summer stream flows and species extinctions. As a further effect of global warming, diseases like malaria are returning into areas where they have been extinguished earlier. This is only the beginning of the effects global warming can have on our earth. As the greenhouse gases continue to increase and enter the atmosphere these effects are only going to increase in severity making it harder and harder to maintain our quality of life.

Many people find it hard to believe that the effects of global warming can become as severe as scientists are predicting but the patterns support these theories. When you read studies comparing today’s weather to weather 20years ago there are already signs proving the effects of global warming. Pay attention to the weather today and the severe weather being reported from all over the world and you will begin to see the effects within your own life as well.

We can all do our part to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases within our atmosphere. No matter how small the act might be (saving electricity, conserving fuels, etc) every action makes a difference when we are all making these eco-smart decisions. There are no doubts that the effects of global warming are only going to persist and increase if we do not do something today. The fact is that even if greenhouse emission gases were completely eliminated today it will still take years to eliminate the threats of global warming. This is why it is so important to do what we can today!

Conferences, lectures, meetings and events are increasingly being broadcast across the web by businesses, societies and corporations alike. It is not only a new and exciting way for delegates to view or review the event, but a cost effective way of delivering your event to a large; or even GLOBAL audience.

Whatever the event or message you are trying to put across, an effective webcast will live on long after the session is over. It also allows you to deliver the event to audiences that could not attend, operate on a different time zone and can cut travel and accommodation expenses. With interactive possibilities, your event webcast can offer viewers a new type of advanced experience; helping to deliver your message or information.

If you want to get your event or message heard, a well marketed webcast is the way to do it. There is however a few things you should consider when considering webcasting your event:

Planning

Ninety percent or more of the work for a live event webcast should be done in the planning stages. If you try to foresee potential problems before the event starts, you can drastically reduce your stress levels on the day.

Particularly if you are producing a LIVE webcast session of your event, there are many things that can go wrong so ensure you produce a number of test session before the main event. The goal of any webcast should be a seamless, buffer-free video at a sustained quality irrespective of number of users. Ensure that the venue’s internet connection is up to the job and your server is capable of handling more than the expected viewers.

The most important thing is marketing the event and inviting users. Recording

Depending on the type of session you are producing, you may chose to use single camera coverage of your event or a multiple camera, fully vision mixed set-up. It is very important to bare-in-mind that viewers attention span online is very different to that in front of a TV. Multi-camera coverage will add interest to the session by varying the shot and providing the viewer with a more complete production.

Any event webcast should have exceptional production values. A badly lit venue or poor audio will quickly degrade the quality of the event and viewers will lose interest. Live event video production is a tricky business and to get the best value for money, you need to commission someone who specialises in Live Event coverage. This will not only increase the production values of your video but you will be able to draw upon their experience in ensuring your webcasts goes without a hitch.

If you event features presenters with a slideshow, it is important to transfer this information to the webcast. There are a number of options of how to do this but by far the most effective is to use an interface such as First Sight Media’s ‘pro-viewer’ which allows for the slides and video to be viewed in separate windows on screen; providing the viewer with option to watch the video and view the slide at his or her discretion. 

Delivery

It is important to give the viewer a suitable way of watching the webcast. This can be simply a link that opens the stream directly or a webpage with the video embedded inside. This allows you to keep your company branding and other suitable information around the video.

There are many options for the player that delivers your content. It is important to consider your audience when making your decision; if for example the majority of your audience will be watching on a Mac, you may wish to use QuickTime. Adobe Flash Player on the other hand is a diverse player installed on an estimated 98% of internet enabled machines. This means that users watching in large corporations will not need to contact their IT departments to help them watch the session and firewalls are unlikely to interfere.

If you are going to use something like the ‘pro-viewer’, you need to ensure that it is easy to use by even the least technical of users. Consider a ‘user-guide’ or even a technical support number.
