Is SEO Still A Major Marketing Issue?

Is SEO Still A Major Marketing Issue?

The web is eternally evolving. What was dominant one year often doesn’t even exist five years later. The question these days is whether SEO is still a critical factor in marketing plans for businesses looking for an only presence?

Search engine optimization, better known as SEO, is the process of getting a site to rank highly under certain keyword phrases so that said sites are seen when consumers use the keyword phrase in a search. The advantage to obtaining high rankings through SEO is they produce lots of free traffic. The downside is obtaining those rankings can take a lot of time, effort and money to achieve. Still, the long term benefit of free traffic still makes the process a good choice from a return on investment perspective. Well, at least it used to.

The last couple of years have seen the explosion of social media, local search, video and other forms of online marketing developments. All of these have arguably created an entirely new form of online experience, one that many are taking steps to maximize from a marketing perspective. The question is whether this makes SEO somewhat irrelevant these days. I think not.

SEO still has a place in your marketing plan because SEO provides a more direct response to a consumer need. By this, I simply mean that people do not go to any of these new sources to find a specific product or service. I spend way too much time on Facebook and YouTube. I have never purchased anything through them. My response to advertisements, particularly on YouTube is to ignore them because I think they are annoying. I go to Facebook to connect with old friends and family across the country. I might occasionally look at and even click an add, but it is pretty rare.

Now contrast this to what I do when I have a specific need. Let’s say I am looking for a piece of software. I go to a search engine and type in the software subject or name and then usually something like “cheap”. Hey, I’m frugal! Regardless, the point is I still search for specific items using search engines instead of the newer mediums.

Does SEO have a place in your marketing plan these days? Yes, if you want consumers looking for something specific to find your site and make a purchase.

SEO Mistakes Done by Major Seo Experts

SEO Mistakes Done by Major Seo Experts

1 Targetting the wrong keywords This is a mistake many people make and what is worse – even experienced SEO experts make it. People choose keywords that in their mind are descriptive of their website but the average users just may not search them. For instance, if you have a relationship site, you might discover that “relationship guide” does not work for you, even though it has the “relationship” keyword, while “dating advice” works like a charm. Choosing the right keywords can make or break your SEO campaign. Even if you are very resourceful, you can’t think on your own of all the great keywords but a good keyword suggestion tool, for instance, the Website Keyword Suggestion tool will help you find keywords that are good for your site. SEO is based on the keywords that you use that’s the major reason for your website to be on the top charts.

2 Ignoring the Title tag Leaving the <title> tag empty is also very common. This is one of the most important places to have a keyword, because not only does it help you in optimization but the text in your <title> tag shows in the search results as your page title.

3 A Flash website without a html alternative

Flash might be attractive but not to search engines and users. If you really insist that your site is Flash-based and you want search engines to love it, provide an html version. Search engines don’t like Flash sites for a reason – a spider can’t read Flash content and therefore can’t index it.

4 JavaScript Menus Using JavaScript for navigation is not bad as long as you understand that search engines do not read JavaScript and build your web pages accordingly. So if you have JavaScript menus you can’t do without, you should consider build a sitemap (or putting the links in a noscript tag) so that all your links will be crawlable.

5 Lack of consistency and maintenance Our friend Rob from some top internet marketing company often encounters clients, who believe that once you optimize a site, it is done foreve. If you want to be successful, you need to permanently optimize your site, keep an eye on the competition and – changes in the ranking algorithms of search engines.

6 Concentrating too much on meta tags A lot of people seem to think SEO is about getting your meta keywords and description correct! In fact, meta tags are becoming (if not already) a thing of the past. You can create your meta keywords and descriptions but don’t except to rank well only because of this.

7 Using only Images for Headings Many people think that an image looks better than text for headings and menus. Yes, an image can make your site look more distinctive but in terms of SEO images for headings and menus are a big mistake because h2, h2, etc. tags and menu links are important SEO items. If you are afraid that your h1 h2, etc. tags look horrible, try modifying them in a stylesheet.

8 Ignoring URLs Many people underestimate how important a good URL is. Dynamic page names are still very frequent and no keywords in the URL is more a rule than an exception. Yes, it is possible to rank high even without keywords in the URL but all being equal, if you have keywords in the URL (the domain itself, or file names, which are part of the URL), this gives you additional advantage over your competitors. Keywords in URLs are more important for MSN and Yahoo! but even with Google their relative weight is high, so there is no excuse for having keywordless URLs.

9 Backlink spamming It is a common delusion that it more backlinks are ALWAYS better and because of this web masters resort to link farms, forum/newgroup spam etc., which ultimately could lead to getting their site banned. In fact, what you need are quality backlinks.

10 Lack of keywords in the content Once you focus on your keywords, modify your content and put the keywords wherever it makes sense. It is even better to make them bold or highlight them.

Backlinks Are Still The Major Website Traffic Stream

Let’s start with this experiment.  Go to Google, Yahoo or MSN and type “get it here” in the search box. Note the results on the first result pages and try to deduce why the results came out what they are!Being on the first page of results on major search engines such as Google, Yahoo or MSN for certain keywords is the purpose of every search engine optimization project. Being at the first page, will bring free organic traffic and of course more business and value to the website.  When optimizing for search engines, most optimizers concentrate on optimizing the website itself by enhancing titles, keywords, descriptions, image alts, page text and other factors that with no doubt are very important for any search engine optimization project. However, I noticed that webmasters get lazy when it comes to the most important factor that brings websites to the top of the search engine results. At the time of writing this article, both Google and Yahoo returned quicktime.com in the first position for the “get it here” keyword. MSN returned the Adobe flash player page. The least amount of results was 354,000,000 search results. When you go to either the adobe flash player page or the quick time player page and take notes from a search engine optimization prospective; “get it here” is not in the domain name, not in the title of the page, not in the keywords, not in the meta description, not in any alt of the images nor anywhere else in the pages text or html source code! Further, you can bet that you will get the same notes if you looked at all the web pages on the first result pages of Google, Yahoo or MSN.  The question is: how did these pages get to rank high in search engines in such a way in spite the fact that they are irrelevant and not optimized for that specific keyword? The domain name, title, meta description, keywords, image alts and page text are all important seo factors but they are obviously not the answer. The major search engine optimization factor is backlinks.Optimizing your website’s elements such as the keywords and your page texts is just the beginning. Those elements are important but they should only be considered as a preparation phase. The real work starts right after finishing this phase.Adobe flash player and quick time is used by millions of users. You probably have encountered something similar to this sentence “This page requires flash player. If you do not have flash player installed get it here”. The “get it here” is a backlink to the flash player page. Millions of websites have a link to the Adobe flash player page with “get it here” for the text of the link and with no doubts that’s why adobe flash player is number one for the “get it here” keyword. An important thing to notice here is that the benefit of having backlinks to a site is not only by bringing the website to the top of search engine results. A backlink also brings even more website traffic from clicks on that link. If you have paid for a pay per click marketing campaign, then you know how much a click is worth! Millions of users click the “get it here” link and go to the Adobe and QuickTime website at no cost to either! You do the math!Backlinks are with no doubt your primary source of website traffic. Backlinks bring you to the top of search engine results. Backlinks establishes your website popularity. Traffic to your website is the value of your website, backlinks are what creates traffic and therefore, building backlinks should be on the top of your marketing campaign priorities to maximize the traffic and value of your website.Backlinks are simply the links that you get to your website from other websites. If you do not have sufficient amount of links pointing to your website, you will keep striving and paying money to get a small portion of traffic that probably will not cover your expenses nor will it be worth the time you spend using other search engine optimization methods such as optimizing your website content. Even if you have the best website with the best content, if you do not have backlinks, you will not have any significant website traffic.

Internet Video Marketing Drives Major Traffic to Your Website

Nowadays, more and more people are posting their videos on the Internet. Why? It is because Internet video is the fastest way to get recognized. Majority of the people world-wide use the Internet for research, communication, business, and most especially for recreation and entertainment, and because multitude of people use the Internet, it also has become a very effective marketing tool for any business.
Especially now that any one and every one can view videos on line, and that more and more people are inclined to watch videos rather than read, Internet video is increasingly becoming a popular marketing tool for Internet marketers. That is why marketers usually incorporate videos with corresponding articles or blog entries or vice versa. The video may be an artistic ad or a comic one, but what most marketers keep in mind is having their URL displayed on the video while playing. This way, viewers easily notice the link and somewhat become embedded in their minds.
Moreover, marketers have specific websites that mainly contain many other Internet videos that can bait more viewers to check out their sites, and eventually subscribe or buy products and services. That is how vital videos are in driving major traffic to your website.
However, simply posting your videos on YouTube, Revver, myspace, metacafe, or other similar video sites would be utterly useless if you don’t lead them directly to your own website. That is why it is essential that you put in your website address or URL in the descriptive box when posting your video. This way, when viewers can click on the URL, they will be instantly directed to your own website wherein you can further encourage them to subscribe or purchase.
Another essential item that you have to supply in posting your video is a keyword loaded description of your video, meaning it has must be composed of the essential as well as mainstream keywords.
The keyword description that you put in for your video works similarly to an SEO, meaning that by typing in the keywords in the search engine, the search engine will directly lead the searcher to pages of search results, consisting of sites that use those keywords.
And what puts your video or site in a good spot in the search result page is the amount of different links attached to it. It is how the system to recognize the video or site is a relevant one.
Thus, it is also advised that you submit your video to as many video hosting sites, blogs, podcasts, and other social bookmarking lists. This is called Social Media Optimization. By optimizing your online presence, it makes you more visible through searches within community websites as well as online communities. Other social network connectors include tags, bookmarks, RSS feeds, reviews, trackbacks, comments, and ratings.

The Major Benefits of Using Flash Video (flv) format to display online video

In the Internet age, online video is an integral role of many websites. People like to watch videos on the internet. Websites adding videos online are becoming mainstream, and online video is transforming the way we watch movie, TV programs, communicate and learn.

Online video is a killer application for the Internet and many online rich media marketing strategies are base on video marketing. People are browsing, searching, viewing and sharing video media files interactively. Video sharing websites such as YouTube receives tens of thousands of home made videos everyday, ranging from tips on how to make your next bookshelf, to the various home-made teasers of the latest movie, right to tips on losing weight. You can create videos on pretty much anything you are interested about: news events, entertainment, business events and trainings, personal videos and even for political events. A business website can also use online video to increase creditability of its website content and improve customer intimacy.

The easiest way to integrate video to your website is by uploading your video file to an online video sharing website (such as Youtube), which will create a player for your video file and display the HTML code for you to insert to your web page. There are a few problems, however, if you are too dependent on these video sharing websites.

First of all, these online video websites usually add their own watermark to the videos and makes them their property. For some people this is acceptable, but serious users and business owners are having problems with this practice. Not to mention the privacy issue which is very common among video sharing websites, because all uploaded videos can be copied from online websites very easily and added to any other website.

There are several third party software and websites that make downloading videos from online video websites to hard drives a breeze. Sadly this creates an issue with copyright protection.

When you spend your time making the video, regardless of the topic or quality of your story, you would like to have full ownership of that video. However because you have submitted your video to a public video sharing websites, you can no more claim exclusive ownership rights on the video file.

This is one major reason is why having the videos in your full control is crucial and makes uploading them to your own server a must. With fast falling hosting fee and disk storage cost, nowadays it is much easier and affordable to host the videos on your own server. Many webmasters are converting video files into flash streaming video file format (FLV, which is the same format most video websites including Youtube are using). The FLV file are then hosted on their own web server, so that their visitors can view the video directly, without connecting to a third party video server.

Flash video (.FLV) is an Adobe standard for online video streaming. Flash video format can compress movie file much more efficient than that of the traditional video formats (such as WMV, AVI, MOV, etc), and it takes much less buffering time when the user clicks on the Play button. FLV is a streaming movie format, Which means that the video will play a lot faster over the Internet, and viewers can rewind the video to any previous location easily without spending time waiting for the movie to reload.

In order to support video playing, different video file formats require a plug-in to enable them to be played over the Internet in different web browsers. Another advantage of FLV file format, is that Adobe Flash plug-in is installed on over 95% of personal computers. That means you and the visitors of your site are most likely among those people that don’t have to download anything to watch a flash video. Flash video format are also cross platform and browser independent. flash video file format can be easily played on a Windows PC, a MAC, a Linux machine, or even a smart phone, which makes it the most compatible video format available nowadays.

Another advantage of embedding video on your website using FLV file format, is that you can use different types of video player skins to play the FLV file, while most other video file format requires you to use their default player online. You can easily select and change the skins to your FLV video player , which in turn makes the player unique among the many others out there. Adobe Flash itself is a great multimedia development tool, and offers lots of flexibility to programmers to customize its video players look and feel.

And if you are not a programmer, there are also many shareware and freeware software, which can easily convert your existing videos in other formats, such as mpg, avi or wmv, to FLV video file format, and then let you select a pre-designed video player skin which can integrate nicely with your existing website.

In additional to a standard video player component with play, pause, rewind, fast forward buttons, you can also add your own link, logo image and copyright messages in the video, as well as additional features such as creating a video play list with thumbnail images.

Flash video format (FLV) has became a clear winner over many other video solutions with its popularity among video sharing websites, and because of its distinct advantage of cross platform support and built-in streaming capability. If you have video files you like to put online and hosted on your own server, you should consider converting it to FLV format before you embed it to your web page.
