Tales from the web: Making a gaming site and making money – Part 1

This is the first article in a series that I plan to write about trying to build a website and generate a positive cashflow from it. 

The Plan:

I like to play casual games on the web, so I decided to go with what I like.  My plan is to create a series of websites that host casual flash games.  Each website will have a targeted URL with a targeted home page.  The first in the series is Golf Arcade the url is www.golfarcade.net.  On this site the home page contains all games related to golf, but like all the other sites I intend to create, the site will include other game types.  I have decided to take the targeted approach on the home page with hopes to be more successful in getting ranked in search engines….I’ll let you know how that turns out. 

I will place advertising on the website to generate some revenue.  I’m not really sure what kind of revenue I can expect, but I don’t expect to get rich off the idea.  I think right now I would be happy just to make enough to pay for my morning coffee.

I’m using two advertising services to try to generate revenue from my site(s).  The first is adbrite and the second is google ad sense.  Both are very easy to setup.  You just create an account, and paste a little snippet of code into your web pages and voila, you are now an advertiser.  I’m going with two different advertisers to compare how well they pay.  My research on this topic gave me mixed results, so I just decided to try it for myself.  If one tends to pay out much more than the other, I will ditch the least paying one.

I’m using google analytics to track the traffic to my site, if you have never used google analytics I would strongly suggest you get an account, it’s free and gives you loads of great information.

I am using 1 and 1 hosting as my hosting company, they offer 250gig of storage space with unlimited transfers, that is a big bonus if you intend to host files that have any significant size to them.  My hosting costs are a month.

To build the actual website I did some searching around the web and found a good site that has a very large database of games and offers a nice xml feed.  I wrote some software to read the feed and download all the information I need for each game, so far that is working well.  I’m writing the software in Java and using Apache Velocity, a templating engine, to create the actual html.  I then upload all the static html to my domain.  Why don’t I just create a dynamic web app instead?  Well the answer is quite simple, I took this approach so I am not tied to any one hosting company.  If I decide to switch hosting companies then I don’t have to worry about wether or not that company offers jsp/.net/php service.

I launched Golf Arcade about a week ago, and I’ve already made several changes since it’s first inception, and learned a lot.

What I’ve Learned So Far:

I started working on the first website about 3 weeks ago, and have launched the first version of my website about 1 week ago.  Immediately after I launched the website I started thinking about how I can spread the word without having to spend a ton of cash (read: spend no cash).  The fist thing I decided to do was post a link to some of the games on my facebook page.  I figured that all of my friends that spend way too much time playing games on there would love to get another gaming site.  I posted the links and waited until the next morning to look at my analytics.  First thing the next day I looked at my analytics expecting to see hundreds of referrals from my facebook links, and of course I had 2.  At that moment I learned that this is going to be a bit harder than I thought.  For the next few days I spent a lot of time reading about website promotion and seo.

The second thing I’ve learned is that I should have done some research into the actual games before I decided to begin with a targed golf gaming site.  As it turns out, there are not a lot of good golf flash games available.  I chose the domain and the theme because I like golf, not because there are good games.  As a result of this, my first website really took a hit because the home page has just terrible content. 

SEO Tips:

Here are just a few of the tips I’ve found over the last few days.

Use the meta keywords tag Make sure your meta keywords match the actual content of your site Use the meta description tag Add as much unique content as you possibly can to your page Make sure all your images define values for alt and title, these two attributes are the ‘content’ of your images.

Over the next week or two I intend to go through my website with a fine tooth comb to make sure my keywords are relevant.  I’m also goin to focus on creating another website in my series of flash websites.  As of right now I’m leaning towards a site that is targeted toward Solitare games.

At the time of this writing my analytics show that I have had 153 visits to my golf website, which would be great except that 80% are from me testing things out.

Computer based home recording studios must include a reasonably powerful computer (with at least 1 GB of RAM), an audio interface, and a digital audio workstation program. If you want to record any kind of acoustic instruments or vocals you will need microphones. For those who interested in using synths, samplers, loops, and drum machines I highly recommend the Reason software. You will also, of course, need some sort of system for listening back to your music. You really should have both speakers and headphones (listen to your music both ways to make sure you have a good mix.)

What kind of computer should you get? Well if you already have a computer that you are happy with then you can likely use the one you already have. But you must make sure it has at least 1 GB of RAM. And in all likelihood you’ll want more than that. I recommend at least 2 GB. Your recording and mixing software will work far better with more RAM.

Should you get a Mac or a PC? In my opinion either option is fine. Most people make too big a deal out of this. Some programs work better with one or the other and while other programs only work with one or the other. So if you have a certain program that you really want to use, make sure it’s compatible with your computer.

What kind of audio interface you get depends on two things: Your needs & your budget. If you only plan on recording yourself then you won’t need more than two inputs (at most.) Unless of course you have a live drum set (it’s good to record drums with many inputs for the different microphones.) But there’s more to consider than just how many inputs you get with your interface, you should also consider sound quality. The more expensive models tend to also have better sound quality. Get what you can afford.

There are a lot of choices as far as digital audio workstation (DAW) software. There’s Pro Tools (which works with the Digidesign audio interfaces.) There’s Cubase. There’s Nuendo. There’s Logic. And there’s quite a few others as well. Which one is right for you? Well first you should know that some of these programs only work with PC (Cakewalk’s SONAR & Sony Acid) or Mac (Logic & Digital Performer.) Bedsides that I think they are all quite similar actually. The important thing is which one you feel most comfortable with. You can download free demo versions to see which one fits you best. There are some general tips about digital audio workstations that I can give: Sony Acid tends to be a good choice for those who do loop based music (like hip hop and techno.) Cubase is a good choice for people on PCs or Macs. Pro Tools is a good choice for those using a Mac but it’s probably not the best choice for those using Windows. It tends to work better on Macs and it’s actually not as full featured as Cubase.

As far as microphones are concerned you will want to buy a condenser microphone for recording vocals and acoustic instruments. With microphones you usually get what you pay for. Better clarity comes from better mics (and better mic preamps but that’s getting a bit too complicated for this article.) Better mics cost more money. Dynamic mics are good for recording drums and amps. I would say they are less essential unless you have a drum set. If you have some good guitar effect plugins (such as Waves GTR 3) then you’ll probably be able to get a good sound plugging your electric guitar (or bass) directly into your audio interface.

Reason is the best all in one solution for those who want a drum machine, a sampler, a synthesizer, and/or a looping program. It’s top quality software that I cannot recommend any higher. If you can afford it and you are interesting in any sort of “synthetic” elements in your music then it’s a must have.

The term is intended to convey that somehow these guys are doing something mysterious and illegal online that the search engines such as Google cannot detect, but if you believe that then you are nuts! Google hire only the best, and these guys will spot these antics from many miles away. I once tried one black hat technique, exactly as suggested in an eBook that cost me over 0, and instantly lost my Adsense account for life. Google experts are not idiots, and I lost a good source of income that was earning me around 00 monthly in an instant by believing these guys.

So forget it! Don’t make my mistake. I have now made up for that error which I could have avoided if I had read Google’s TOS – not ‘black hat’, just ’stupid’! Stupid or not, I got over that by following a perfectly legal technique that I read about online known as the ’silo structure’ of websites. Using that I can get almost any website I develop into the top pages of Google’s search engine results. That makes making money online a little bit easier!

Maybe not always Page #1, but certainly Page #2 and 3. From there it takes a few tweaks to get to the top page, and then you can work up from there. Many of these so-called ‘tweaks’ involve advertising and link-gathering, and I use SEO and article marketing for that. Being a professional article ghostwriter, this was not a big deal for me, but the point is that it works.

Here is how it works and what you must do.

First, you have to choose different keywords for each of your web pages, including your home page, and use these as your page titles – by that I mean both visibly, at the top of each page, and also invisibly except to search engine spiders: these are contained within Title tags in the HTML in the Head section of your page. As far as I know, this only works for HTML or CSS pages – I don’t go much for Flash websites, and I am not sure how that pans out with respect to search engines and SEO. Sorry for my ignorance, but I won’t try to kid you if I don’t know.

In fact I am getting ahead of myself. First you should have drawn up a plan for your website – a silo structure involves a home page pointing to each of several sub pages. Each sub page has its own title and links, and links to one article page that itself then links to another and so on. Every page links to the Home Page, but to no other page but the next in sequence. I don’t have time here to describe the website structure in full, but I know that it works and wouldn’t try to fool you if it didn’t: you would find out for yourself soon enough!

Another thing that seems to work for me is to arrange your HTML so that the spiders see your text first before any navigation. There are ways to do that, and experts have told me it is ‘rubbish’, but I get higher listings than these experts. When I point that out, I am told that I am using easy keywords, but what’s easy about being at positions 1, 2 and 3 on Page #1 of Google for a keyword with 620 million results? Another totally different website with 131 million competing web pages?

That’s not an advert – just some justification that this works. So try that and see if it works for you. SEO is more than just web design and meta tags. It’s a state of mind, and article marketing also plays a significant part.

The next part of the strategy is to advertise your website using article marketing. You can either write your own articles or pay for a ghostwriter to do it for you. You will likely have to start off doing it yourself until you are making enough money to outsource. That’s another buzz word at the moment: ‘outsourcing’. It is simply another word for paying other people to do the work – if you can afford it, and many can’t.

Sometimes I wonder if these so-called ‘gurus’ have their heads screwed on the right way! They charge us a fortune to tell us to get other people to do all the work for us – no doubt they will also be offering their services! Forget it.

Learn how to write articles, learn how to write some simple HTML, and the learn the very basic principles of SEO, and you can make money online using SEO and article marketing to get your web page (you only need one from each website) listed on Page #1 of Google (forget Yahoo and the rest) and you will get loads of traffic to that web page.

Just make sure it is worth visiting, and that you can offer your visitor exactly what he or she was looking for when they used the keyword for which your website is optimized.

RULE #1: if you optimize a web page for one keyword, then make sure that the page offers loads of good and useful information on the topic of that keyword.

Be honest, seem reliable and prove that you know your stuff and you should get the respect of your readers, and then deliver when they click to your web page. That is how to make money online by combining SEO and article marketing. Agreed?
