Google introduced the nofollow attribute in 2005 to reduce the effectiveness of certain types of spam, thereby improving the quality of search engine results, and reducing spam in general. It was designed by Matt Cutts and Jason Shellen from Blogger.com webspam team. Its effect was described to remove the PageRank value of the link.

Different search engines treat links with nofollow differently. Google does not count the link as a vote, or index the target page if previously not indexed. Officially Google does not even make a note of the existence of the target page. Yahoo! follows the link, and may index the page, but the link won’t give more value to the target. Other search engines may, or may not care about the attribute at all.

Some links have been tagged nofollow in Wikimedia software since the introduction in 2005, but site wide adding of nofollow to all external links in the English language Wikipedia happened only in January 2007. I would like to focus a bit more on Keyword Optimization. This is one of the most important factors when creating a new website. Your keyword phrases can tell you how much traffic to expect. A good keyword list can get you the targeted visitors to your site that you want. Then use these keyword phrases in your material on your site and you just became a content rich site that search engines love to see.

When starting off with keyword phrases keep a general idea of what you think the phrases you want to use are. Research these phrases and make sure that the phrase itself gets searched on the three major search engines. That would be google , yahoo, and msn in that order. Keep in mind that google has a 65-70% market share of the searches. You should focus on that search engine first.

When I start a keyword phrase project I use an excel spreadsheet. I use the keyword tools at free wordtracker and google. Google reports the searches monthly, while wordtracker reports the searches daily. You want a phrase to be searched at least 500 times a month. Wordtracker doesn’t get the amount of searches that google gets a month. So the numbers can be very wide in range, but if you keep the records you can see what phrases are popular and which one are not.

The next step is to find a niche. If you don’t you could be competing against millions of other web sites. The next step after you get your 25-30 keyword phrases is to find the amount of websites that are competing for that phrase. When most people search it called a broad match. If you put quotes around your phrase you are going to exact phrase search. This search doesn’t go quite far enough. You need to do an all in title search to find out how many web sites are competing for this phrase. To do an all in title search type in without spaces : allintitle:”your keyword phrase here”. The results that are received will be how many time that phrase appeared in the title of a web page. A good target number on google the results should be under 20,000.  Make sure to annotate these results on your spreadsheet also.

Your spread sheet should now have a phrases, google searches a month, free keyword tracker searches, and the all in title results. Its very important to eliminate the phrases that don’t get searched. Eliminate the one with more than 20,000 all in title results. Before you know it you will have a rock solid keyword list that can take your site to the top of the rankings. This step can be done at little or no cost, we can even have an administrative assistant do this work.

Step Four: Time to show off with some article marketing, we are in business offering our product and services because we are experts in what we have to offer. Let’s take that knowledge and share it, write a few articles about us and our services. If we own a scooter repair shop, write about changing the oil in a scooter, or how to store a scooter in the wintertime or how to find parts for scooters. You can have staff members write articles about something they know best. We need to make the articles informative, useful, and fun. Try to say with general topics like routine maintenance, or tips for making a product purchase more useful or last longer or get more value out of it. Do not write articles that give out competitive advantages or trade secrets or how to do the extraordinary things we can provide, be helpful, but not overly helpful. We can hire people to write for us, the cost for each article should be no more than twenty five dollars. With our articles in hand, post them to websites focus on publishing articles, some sites are “how to” sites, some are industry specific, others publish categorized articles like Buzzle.
